Authors raise $100K for Levine Querido
27 September 2023

Earlier this month, a group calling itself Friends 4 Levine Querido raised almost $110,000 during a 10-day online auction held September 3–13, with the proceeds benefiting indie children's publisher Levine Querido. LQ reports that it has been hit hard by the dramatic spike in book bans, as, according to the American Library Association, most of the books being targeted are written by BIPOC and LGBTQ authors and LQ specializes in publishing books by authors from these and other traditionally marginalized communities. FTC files antitrust suit against Amazon
27 September 2023

As was long rumored, the Federal Trade Commission, along with 17 states, has sued Amazon for antitrust violations, accusing the company of building and protecting a monopoly in various ways, including: forcing independent retailers on its online marketplace not to sell for lower prices elsewhere; favoring its own branded products over those from other retailers in searches; and requiring that retailers' products sold via Amazon Prime be handled and delivered by Amazon... In a statement about the suit, the FTC said it alleges that Amazon is "a monopolist that uses a set of interlocking anticompetitive and unfair strategies to illegally [...]

Florida school district orders librarians to purge all books with LGBTQ characters
27 September 2023

Librarians in public schools in Charlotte County, Florida, were instructed by the school district superintendent to remove all books with LGBTQ characters or themes from school and classroom libraries. The guidance by Charlotte County Superintendent Mark Vianello and the school board's attorney, Michael McKinley, was obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project (FFTRP) through a public records request and shared with Popular Information. The guidance made clear that all books with LGBTQ characters are to be removed even if the book contained no sexually explicit content. The librarians asked if they could retain books in school and classroom libraries [...]

Queen Camilla and Brigitte Macron launch Anglo-French book prize
26 September 2023

Queen Camilla and French President Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte, have launched a UK-France literary prize for young adult fiction. This will allow "UK and French citizens to share joint literary experiences, reinforcing cultural ties while celebrating the joys of reading", Buckingham Palace said in a statement. The Entente Littéraire Prize, or Prix de l'Entente Littéraire, is clearly inspired by the Entente Cordiale, the 1904 agreement between the UK and French governments that sharply improved bilateral relations. One hope for the award is that it will help redress the translation imbalance between the UK and France. Eighteen percent of all new [...]

Reader Review: "One Last Kill"
27 September 2023 - Cloggie Downunder

by Cloggie Downunder (Wollongong): One Last Kill is the tenth book in the Tracy Crosswhite series by best-selling award-winning American author, Robert Dugoni. When Seattle PD's corrupt Chief of Police, Marcella Weber sets Cold Case detective Tracy Crosswhite the task of solving a twenty-five-year-old serial killer case, Tracy knows it's a political move: if she solves it, her Captain, Johnny Nolasco will get the credit; if she fails, it will underline the need for the city to inject more funds into the Police Department. Back in 1993, Johnny Nolasco headed a task force trying to solve the Route 99 killings: [...]

Reader Review: "North Woods"
21 September 2023 - Ann E Beman

by Ann E Beman: To call these linked stories would do this sweeping novel injustice. The stories are rooted to the ground, overgrowing one another to create a marvelous forest -- a wondrous palimpsest. The novel's fertile ground is a single house in the woods of Western Massachusetts, inhabited by first one soul then another and another. All iterations feature richly drawn characters -- Puritan lovers gone wild, an English soldier utterly infatuated with apples, his spinster twin daughters torn by passion and envy. Further inhabitants -- humans, as well as a mountain lion on the prowl and a ravenous [...]

Reader Review: "One Last Kill"
20 September 2023 - She Treads Softly

by She Treads Softly: One Last Kill by Robert Dugoni is a very highly recommended procedural investigating cold cases from a serial killer and the tenth novel in the Detective Tracy Crosswhite series. When the Seattle Times plans to run a series of articles about the Route 99 serial killer from 25 years ago, Detective Tracy Crosswhite is ordered to reopening the investigation by Police chief Marcella Weber. After thirteen victims, the serial killer seemed to stop and the task force at the time, lead by Captain Johnny Nolasco, reached no conclusion. Weber assigns Nolasco to work with Tracy in [...]

Reader Review: "The Butchers' Blessing"
16 September 2023 - Gloria M

by Gloria M (San Jose): The novel "The Butchers' Blessing" is contained within a contemporary timeframe, from 1996 to 2018. Ruth Gilligan has crafted a totally original story and it is so compelling many readers believed this group of butchers were based on an actual folktale. While much of the history and news bits in the book are accurate (the mad cow crisis and the tensions in Ireland etc. etc.,) Gilligan has admitted in interviews that this bunch of traveling men emerged solely from her imagination. Evidently this reveal disappointed and even angered (gasp) many readers! All fiction is by [...]

Reader Review: "The Lincoln Conspiracy"
15 September 2023 - Katherine Pond

by Katherine Pond (POST MILLS): Meltzer and Mensch do it again-- they have produced an interesting, exciting and thoroughly researched report on a significant period in American history. Their writing and the use of short chapters made covering almost 400 pages of intrigue and chaos almost easy. Imagine, if you will, Lincoln's assassination in Baltimore Md on his way to his first inauguration. Traveling from Springfield, Ill to Washington DC on a carefully planned route that covers the border States into the Northeast and then South through Maryland, rife with Southern sympathizers AFTER South Carolina has seceded, a plot to [...]
