“A book feels true when it feels true,” she said to him, impatiently. “A book’s true when you can say, “Yeah! That’s just how damn people behave all the time.” Then you know it’s true,” Jillsy said.

National poll finds Americans support freedom to read
24 March 2023

Iowa's Grinnell College and Seltzer & Co., a polling company in Des Moines, which partner to conduct a national poll each year on the attitudes of Americans towards politics and political figures, as well as hot-button cultural issues, released their latest data Wednesday. The findings regarding controversial books and their accessibility in public schools should hearten librarians and booksellers everywhere. Three of the 16 questions addressed books in middle school libraries considered contentious or divisive because they explore sexuality, race and racism, or religion. In response to a question on whether such books should be included in public middle school… [...]

ALA reports shocking increase in attempted book bans in 2022
23 March 2023

With book banning and legislative attacks on the freedom to read continuing to surge across the country, the American Library Association announced today that it tracked a stunning 1,269 "demands to censor library books and resources" in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago, and nearly double the record-shattering 729 challenges recorded in 2021. In a release, ALA officials said the challenges involved a record 2,571 unique titles—a stunning 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. Once again, the vast… [...]

Gunned down and burned by the Nazis: the shocking true story of Bambi
23 March 2023

Bambi, the iconic fawn is this year celebrating a very significant birthday, it being a century since the German imprint Ullstein Verlag first published Bambi: A Life in the Woods. Written by Felix Salten, an Austro-Hungarian, the coming-of-age novel would go on to be banned by the Nazis before eventually winding up in the hands of Walt Disney and becoming the animated children's film many know and love. Perhaps the most crucial difference between Salten's novel and Disney's film is that the former was aimed at adults, initially appearing as a serialisation in the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse, before… [...]

Reader Review: "Once We Were Home"
26 March 2023 - Elizabeth @Silver's Reviews

by Elizabeth @Silver's Reviews: Beautifully told in her mesmerizing style, Jennifer Rosner introduces us to four characters who suffered through the war and beyond. The children had a wonderful life of learning and love but a life that heart-wrenchingly changed after the war. Where will Ana and Oskar end up? Reader Review: "Hang the Moon"
25 March 2023 - Shetreadssoftly

by Shetreadssoftly: Hang the Moon by Jeannette Walls is a very highly recommended historical fiction and family drama which follows a young woman in Virginia during Prohibition. Sallie Kincaid is the daughter Duke Kincaid, a wealthy man who owns or runs most of Claiborne County, Virginia. At the Emporium general store he owes, the Duke also sells bootleg whiskey he has received in lieu of rent. Sallie is the daughter of his second wife, who is deceased. She adores her father and his bigger than life personality. His third wife, Jane has a son, Eddie. When she is eight-years-old an… [...]

Reader Review: "We Are Not Like Them"
22 March 2023 - Tony Conty

by Tony Conty (Parkville, MD): "We Are Not Like Them" by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza has an explosive premise that will make it the water cooler book that "The Hate You Give" was. Two life-long best friends (one black and one white and, yes, their race matters) faced a crossroads when the white one's husband shot an unarmed black kid in the line of duty. Emotion is high at the story's beginning, and your mind wanders to how the characters feel instead of what is happening. Jenny, the cop's wife, has a single-minded focus with a baby on the… [...]

Reader Review: "Commitment"
22 March 2023 - Shetreadssoftly

by Shetreadssoftly: Commitment by Mona Simpson is a very highly recommended. This is an excellent, heartbreakingly beautiful family drama that explores the dynamics between the family members and the challenges they face. Diane Aziz is a single mother who works as a nurse to support her three children, Walter, Lina, and Donnie. Now Walter is heading off to college. Driving him from Los Angeles to college at UC Berkeley will be the last thing she does before falling into a debilitating depression. Lina is still in high school and Donnie is much younger when the two have to deal with… [...]

Reader Review: "Corrections in Ink"
21 March 2023 - Umesh Khanna

by Umesh Khanna (New Delhi): Corrections in Ink is a powerful and gripping memoir that takes readers on a journey through the highs and lows of Keri Blakinger's life. From her passion for figure skating to her struggles with addiction and time in prison, Blakinger's story is one of resilience and determination. The book is written with searing honesty and a rawness that is both unsettling and captivating. Blakinger's vivid descriptions of her experiences in prison and the broken justice system leave a lasting impression on the reader. Her insights into the flaws of the prison system are eye-opening and… [...]
