National book awards: finalists use ceremony to call for Israel-Hamas ceasefire after sponsors pull out
16 November 2023

A majority of this year's finalists at the national book awards made a collective statement calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza war at the ceremony in New York on Thursday, amid a storm behind the scenes as sponsors pulled out in anticipation. Twenty of the 25 finalists up for the five categories – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's literature and translated literature – got on stage as author Aaliyah Bilal, nominated in the fiction category for her novel Temple Folk, read out the prepared statement. "On behalf of the finalists, we oppose the ongoing bombardment of Gaza and call for [...]

This book club spent 28 years reading "Finnegans Wake," and now they're starting again, and they're not the only ones!
15 November 2023

For a quarter century, Gerry Fialka, an experimental film-maker from Venice, California, has hosted a book club devoted to a single text: James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, one of the most famously difficult texts in literary history. Starting in 1995, between 10 and 30 people would show up to monthly meetings at a local library. At first they read two pages a month, eventually slowing to just one page per discussion. At that pace, the group – which now meets on Zoom – reached the final page in October. It took them 28 years. And this November, they're starting again: "The [...]

Zibby Media withdraws National Book Award sponsorship over potential for "hate speech"
15 November 2023

Ahead of this year's National Book Awards ceremony, publisher Zibby Media has withdrawn its sponsorship of the event after learning that some authors were planning to use the awards ceremony to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. In a Substack post, Owens, who said that she will not attend the ceremony, cited the potential for "hate speech," "anti-semitic comments," and "a bullying atmosphere" in explaining her decision to withdraw. [...]

Reader Review: "Dewey"
10 December 2023 - Cathryn Conroy

by Cathryn Conroy (Gaithersburg, Maryland): Oh, this book is a little treasure. It made me smile and it made me tear up (a lot!), but most of all, it touched my heart. If you love cats, reading, and libraries—or any one of those—this is a must-read. Written by Vicki Myron and Bret Witter, this is the astonishing and heartwarming story of a fluffy orange cat named Dewey Readmore Books. Vicky Myron was the director of the Spencer (Iowa) Public Library, and on a frigidly cold morning in January 1988, she found an 8-week-old kitten someone had stuffed into the library [...]

Reader Review: "The Prince and the Coyote"
3 December 2023 - Joo

by Joo (India): "The Prince and the Coyote" is a captivating tale that seamlessly weaves together elements of folklore, adventure, and self-discovery. Authored by a master storyteller, the narrative unfolds in a magical realm where a young prince embarks on a transformative journey guided by an enigmatic coyote. The author's vivid descriptions transport readers into a richly imagined world, brimming with vibrant landscapes and fantastical creatures. The interplay between the prince and the coyote serves as the narrative's beating heart, as their unlikely companionship evolves into a powerful metaphor for self-discovery and the complexities of life. As the prince navigates [...]

Reader Review: "Julia"
3 December 2023 - Gloria M

by Gloria M: Sandra Newman has written the companion novel to Orwell's "1984".  We never knew we needed this, but in "Julia" so many of our questions are finally answered and we get the feminine perspective on the Party and Big Brother and the authoritarian nightmare.  If you ever wondered why Julia behaved as she did, then you will find the explanations you seek within this book. Is it necessary to read or re-read "1984" before beginning "Julia"?  No, this is a narrative worthy of standing alone.  However, it is interesting to refresh by reading the original and then as you [...]

Reader Review: "California Golden"
1 December 2023 - Divya Ann Mathew

by Divya Ann Mathew: Melanie Benjamin's "California Golden" takes readers on a captivating journey through the sun-soaked landscapes of Southern California in the 1960s, where the thrilling emergence of surf culture intertwines with the complex dynamics of a family breaking away from societal expectations. At the heart of this novel are the Donnelly sisters, Mindy and Ginger, who navigate the waves of their unconventional upbringing against the backdrop of the burgeoning surf scene. Benjamin skillfully weaves a tale of ambition, sacrifice, and the intricate bonds between mothers and daughters, making "California Golden" an emotionally charged and thought-provoking read. The narrative [...]

Reader Review: "The Wishing Game"
29 November 2023 - PhyllisE

by PhyllisE (Mill Valley): Thanks to Random House & NetGalley for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This book checks all the boxes – heartwarming story, loveable and realistic characters, clever premise, magical realism/fantasy, a book about books, a bit of romance, and a buddy-read with Val. I was surprised this was a debut, as the writing and plotting were smoothly professional. The story juxtaposes the fantasy of a world-famous reclusive children's author who lives on mysterious Clock Island - five miles outside of Portland and reachable only by ferry - with the world [...]
