Dead Until Dark

Don’t Bother if: You’re on team “I’m so sick of hearing about vampires I could puke.” While the vampires are far less emo weiner-y than Edward, they’re still essentially vampires in a romance novel, even if it disguises itself pretty well as a murder mystery.

Sourcebooks donates $200,000 in honor of RBG
20 January 2021

Sourcebooks has donated a total of $200,000 to six organizations supporting causes championed by the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The one-time donations came from profits on sales of 2021 The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg Wall Calendar: Her Words of Hope, Equality, and Inspiration. "Justice Ginsburg was an inspiration to women and girls across the country and the world," said Dominique Raccah, publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks. Amanda Gorman to read one of her poems at the presidential inauguration
15 January 2021

The incoming Biden administration has chosen Amanda Gorman to read one of her poems at the presidential inauguration. She's an inspired choice for a nation desperate for hope and new energy. In 2017, as a sophomore at Harvard, she was appointed the first National Youth Poet Laureate and invited to read from her work at the Library of Congress. She'll publish a children's book called "Change Sings" in September. Gorman will be the sixth poet ever to perform at a modern-day presidential inauguration, a list that includes Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Miller Williams, Elizabeth Alexander and Richard Blanco. [...]

Publishing industry unites to block Trump administration book deals
15 January 2021

Author Barry Lyga has posted an open letter signed by more than 250 authors, agents, booksellers, and publishers supporting their opposition to any publisher signing up President Donald Trump or members of his administration for any further book deals. "Traditionally, members of an outgoing administration can—and do—rely on the cushion of a fat book contract with a healthy advance. In the case of the Trump Administration and its history of outrages, lies, and incitement to insurrection, we cannot allow this to stand. No one should be enriched for their contribution to evil," Lyga wrote in an email to PW. [...]

Amazon hit with ebook price fixing suit
15 January 2021

The law firm that successfully sued Apple and five major publishers for colluding to fix e-book prices in 2011 has now filed a class action suit against Amazon, accusing the company of colluding with the Big Five publishers to restrain price competition in the e-book market. The suit, filed in the Southern District of New York on January 14 by Seattle-based firm Hagens Berman, comes a day after a Wall Street Journal article disclosed that Amazon was under investigation in Connecticut for potentially anti-competitive behavior in the e-book market. [...]

Reader Review: "Juliet"
16 January 2021 - Elizabeth@Silver?sReviews

by Elizabeth@Silver?sReviews: Julie saw Umberto at the back of the room as she was leaving the stage. She knew this wasn't going to be good news because he wasn't smiling like always. "Aunt Rose has died" were the words that tumbled out of his mouth. As sad as Julie was, she also knew there would be something even more distressing....she had to face her twin sister Janice. Janice was four minutes younger than Julie, but she always upstaged her no matter what, and there was always conflict when Janice arrived on the scene. It was pouring down rain the day… [...]

Reader Review: "Life After Life"
5 January 2021 - BuffaloGirlKS

by BuffaloGirlKS (Wright, Kansas): Revolving around the life of an upper class English woman from her birth and death (and subsequent numerous alternative births and deaths) on a cold winter night through both World Wars, this book portrays English society and an individual woman's life in an unusual premise. In reading other reviews, some found it difficult to follow and choppy. Perhaps because I listened to the audiobook, I had no difficulty with this. The book's greatest point for me was Isabel's victimization and her acceptance of it which started with her no importance as far as her mother was… [...]

Reader Review: "Caste"
3 January 2021 - PatCarole

by PatCarole (Boston): I finally finished Caste this morning -- 6 weeks after starting it. (This included a midway break during which I read Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell.) Caste is an important study of where the United States stands in 2020 with regard to race and how we got here. I loved the comparisons to India and the Third Reich which lent a perspective to the continuous racial divide existing in the U.S. Wilkerson's exquisite writing style is what allows the reader to persevere in reading this long book with too much repetition on a very tough subject. I am… [...]

Reader Review: "The Sun Down Motel"
27 December 2020 - Roberta

by Roberta (Los Ranchos): This is the first book of Simone St James that I have read and I loved it. It's like Bates Motel on steroids. I grew up in a town that had many roadside hotels just like the one on the cover of the book. I never thought of them as being haunted, but that's what I will think now whenever I see one. It's a combination thriller, mystery and ghost book. It was a perfect distraction (much needed these days). I'm going to read more from this author. [...]

Reader Review: "The Dutch House"
12 December 2020 - Cloggie Downunder

by Cloggie Downunder (Thirroul): The Dutch House is the seventh novel by NYT best-selling American author, Ann Patchett. It had been Danny's childhood home. Cyril Conroy had bought the incredible Dutch House, there in small-town Pennsylvania, in 1946 for his young family: his wife Elna, and five-year-old Maeve. It was just as the last Van Hoebeek, the original owners, had left it: furnishings, fittings, even clothing. Danny was born a few years later, and lived there until his step-mother threw him out at fifteen. Danny's mom had left when he was three; he was eight when Andrea Smith first came… [...]
